As preparations for the new Premier Soccer League season get away, there’s a quiet optimism surrounding the Orlando Pirates camp. The 2020/21 campaign will be the Buccaneers first full season under German tactician Josef Zinnbauer and the fans will hope the team can build on the positives from the second half of last season.

Zinnbauer took over in December of last year and when the season came to completion, his record made for good reading. 18 games played, 10 wins and only 3 defeats. The German has implemented an exciting style of play, characterised by quick passes through the lines and his preferred 3-4-3 formation. The recent arrival of attackers like Deon Hotto, Terrence Dzvukamanja and young Collins Makgaka should add more dynamism to the Pirates frontline and Thulani Hlatswayo will provide the leadership and solidity that the defence has been needing for a few seasons. Thabang Monare will also provide the midfiled with a calmness that will balance well with Ben Motshwari’s energy.

Having spent the majority of last season watching our local rivals at the summit of the league, the Pirates supporters will hope the Ghost can mount a more serious title challenge in the upcoming campaign.
It won’t be easy. Chiefs only lost the league on the last day, and with the arrival of coaching legend Gavin Hunt, Naturena will no doubt be in high spirits. And with Sundown’s having just won their third successive title, Zinnbauer and his team will be facing a tough battle in the newly christened DStv Premiership.

So, what would be a successful season for Zinnbauer? No question the supporters will be expecting a title challenge, and it’s no surprise considering the immense squad depth at Pirates’ disposal.
Hopefully though, the ghost can add much needed silverware to the cabinet.
